  • Due to BGI's growing presence and influence in the world, BGI Australia was established in August 2016 to support its growth in the Asia-Pacific region. Its office is located on level 6 in the prestigious QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Herston, Brisbane, Queensland. Being a subsidiary of the world's largest genomics organisation headquartered in China with leading gene sequencing platform and superb sequencing and bioinformatics analysis capability, BGI Australia is BGI’s strategic research hub for the Asia Pacific region. Dedicated to facilitating cutting-edge research in healthcare, agriculture, environment and other related areas, BGI Australia continuously pursues collaborative opportunities across the whole nation to pursue scientific excellence by incorporating existing resources to contribute to the vision of using genomics to benefit the whole mankind.

BGI Australia Laboratory

BGI Australia Laboratory, which is BGI’s first southern hemisphere genomics laboratory, is launched in May 2017, unveiling of its cutting-edge sequencer's debut in this part of the world. Being a subsidiary of the world's largest genomic organisation with leading  gene sequencing platform and superb genome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis capability, BGI Australia is devoted to facilitating cutting-edge research in the areas of healthcare, agriculture and environment. 

Local Research Collaborations

BGI Australia has established collaborations with leading research institutions such as QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, CSIRO, the University of Queensland, Griffith University and James Cook University to carry out scientific research and innovative projects in relation to human medicine, health science, sports science, marine science, biodiversity, agriculture and aquaculture. BGI Australia has been undergoing strategic discussions with universities and various organisations regarding future opportunities and partnerships.

BGI College

BGI College focus on innovative education and training for multidisciplinary talents in bioscience and bioindustry. Programs include joint education, external training (bioinformatics training, medical related training & genetic counselor training) and public education (popular science education & summer internship). More than 100 PhD students and 300 MSc students have been trained. 

China National Genebank

China National Genebank

China National Genebank is a platform integrating a large-scale bio-repository and an omics database, operated by BGI. Genebank's mission is to collect, preserve and utilize genomics resources, and to build a network fostering global communication and collaboration on biodiversity conservation and genetic resources utilisation. We have collected over 11.3 million samples (including human, animal, plant and microbe).

GigaScience

GigaScience

GigaScience is an open-access open-data journal for the publication of all types of biological studies that use or create large-scale data sets. With the goal of revolutionizing data accessibility, dissemination, organization, and use, GigaScience has a unique format that integrates article publication with the data-hosting and cloud-computing resources. In three years GigaDB has stored over 194 datasets and 36TB data.

BGI Agriculture

BGI Agriculture (BGI Agro), heardquartered in Dapeng New District, Shenzhen, is engaged in animal & plant new variety development, plantation, livestock breeding, agricultural and aquacultural farming and processing, and micro-ecological research and development with the aim to establish sustainable agricultural industry and guard national food security. Based on advanced BGI sequencing platform and database, BGI Forensics provides traditional foresic services, and also focuses on the research and development of new technologies in forensic genomics, forensic pathology, and forensics. The business scope consists of DNA tests, biological reagents, instruments and ancillary products, establishing forensics industry standards, forensic science education, and forensic genomics research.

MGI

MGI, a subsidiary of BGI-the largest genomics organisation in the world, is specialised in R&D and manufacturing of proprietary instrumentation, medical devices, ancillary consumables and biological reagents e.g. genetic sequencers, mass spectrometers, medical imaging systems, and comprehensive solutions for life science research and applications.
